What if breastfeeding is good for moms?

Not good because it lowers some risk twenty years out. Good because you like it.

Because it’s convenient. Because it’s a little weird. Because you like what your body can do. Because you like being needed. Because some days you even like being the only one who can.

We talk endlessly about what breastfeeding asks of women. We talk almost never about what it gives them.

Maybe that’s because we’re more comfortable with maternal sacrifice than maternal desire.

So: breastfeed because you want to. Breastfeed because you like it. Breastfeed for selfish reasons.
